Arsenalare waiting for Bacary Sagna to respond to their offer of a new contract to stay at Emirates Stadium, Arsène Wengerhas confirmed.
The 30-year-old’s future has been a source of speculation in recent weeks, with Manchester Cityand Paris Saint-Germain both linked with summer swoops for the defender.
I’m confident that he will stay, yes, but we’ll accept his decision
Arsène Wenger
Wenger revealed that Sagna, whose current Arsenal contract expires in the summer, is yet to respond to the Gunners’ offer – but the Frenchman is hopeful the right-back will commit to the club.
“There’s an offer. He has not come back to us yet,” said Wenger.
“I’m confident that he will stay, yes, but we’ll accept his decision. No matter what his decision will be we will accept it and go along with it.”
Asked about reports of Manchester City offering Sagna a three-year contract, Wenger replied: “That cannot be right because it’s illegal.”
Wenger also insisted that Arsenal’s usual policy of not offering longer than one-year contracts to players over 30 years old is not influencing negotiations.
“Look, [the over-30 rule is] not for the defenders necessarily,” Wenger said.
“It depends – it’s a general law in our club, yes. But it’s not a stupid law. We look at individual cases and we adapt it for individuals.”
