Salford Cash Machine Thieves Dig 50ft Tunnel

Sky News - 16 hrs ago Thieves have dug a 50ft (15m) tunnel underneath a cash machine to steal a"significant amount of cash", police said. Detectives believe the perpetrators spent months building the tunnel to access the ATM at Tesco Express on Liverpool Road in Eccles, Salford. They completed their burrowing through wasteland and into the shop overnight on Friday. The thieves stole cash boxes before escaping back through the tunnel, which police describe as having a"complex structure". Detective superintendent Mark Toker said:"These people had obviously spent a long time plotting this crime and I doubt they would have been able to keep their plans secret for all that time, without telling others about their elaborate scheme. "The offenders must have spent long periods of time in the area over the last few months, which people may have noticed. "You may have seen people acting suspiciously on Friday night, possible covered in soil. "I would ask anyone with any information about the robbery to call us as soon as possible." It is not the first time thieves have tunnelled their way to cash in Great Manchester. Police said those responsible for the raid of a Blockbuster shop in Levenshulme spent six months burrowing a 100ft tunnel with lighting and roof supports. The theft occurred in January 2012, eight miles from Friday's raid. Anyone with information should call police on 0161 856 5353 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. 214 comments People of Salford! Have you seen any suspicious men shaking their trouser legs and leaving a trail of soil? A Yahoo! User, 16 hrs ago Actually, if you sit&work it out, they didn't have to work too hard&I would question why it took them that long. Police apparently believe it took them"months"to tunnel.50 ft. If we assume"months is the minimum it could be, i.e. 2 months, then they in fact tunneled less than 10 inches a day. So maybe it was done in the typical way, with spoons&getting rid of dirt via the turn ups of their trousers. Steve, 8 hrs ago Being the father of a 2 year old and a 4 year old, I have sadly been subjected to far more Peppa Pig than I consider to be healthy. As a result, after reading that article, the first image that sprang to mind was not of the more logical one of a group of WW2 prisoners whistling the tune from 'the Great Escape'. Oh no, I straight away saw Mr. Bull standing there and announcing"We're going to DIG UP THE ROAD". A Yahoo! User, 10 hrs ago reminds me of an old comedy tv series called private schulz. he was a german spy sent to england with a load of forged banknotes, intending to destroy the british economy, ended up with the money being buried, and for various reasons the plan never happened, in the second series , he came back to england years after the war intending to dig up the notes and be rich, however after comandeering a criminal gang to help him, and spending ages digging, he realised that a road had been moved, and they'd dug in the wrong place. on re measuring, they found the cash was now under a public loo. so they then tunneled under that. can't remember the end, i believe they found the money, but it was of course old notes, and no longer legal tender. the point is, while digging, they just wore hard hats, and high vis vests, and had fences up around the works, everyone thought it was the council.
