Everton defender Leighton Baines says he heeded his son’s advice on where to place his latest penalty on Sunday.
The Goodison Park outfit did a league double at home to David Moyes’ Manchester United for the first time in over four decades.
Baines fired down the middle past United goalkeeper David de Gea for his fourth goal from the penalty spot so far, a rather unfamiliar approach from the 29-year-old.
Baines said after the game: “It wasn’t blasted, I think it was
controlled. I decided beforehand that I’d go down the middle as I hadn’t
done that so far this season and it was nice to see it go in.
“After my last one, my son told me I’d not done that this season. It was his advice to try going down the middle for one – and it worked.
“I just thought it was a good point he’d made really.”
Kevin Mirallas doubled the ‘Toffees” lead on 52 minutes to keep Everton’s hopes for Champions League football alive, as they currently trail fourth-placed Arsenal by a solitary point.
“It’s a big win. It keeps us in the hunt for fourth spot and it keeps the pressure on Arsenal, added the England international left-back.
“We needed to respond to a disappointing night on Wednesday [against Crystal Palace] and we did that.
“We knew just before kick off that Arsenal had won. We knew we couldn’t afford another slip up and thankfully we got the result.
“The result on Wednesday aside, our form over the last few months has been outstanding. We just want to try to win the next few games and see where it leaves us.”
