Sokoto State governor Aliyu Wamakko yesterday said Nigeria should not be importing rice from any country as the nation was blessed with abundant fertile land to grow the crop.
Wamakko said this in Sokoto while receiving participants of Course 36 of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru near Jos, led by a directing staff, Air Commodore Ademola Omitiju.
The governor said there was abundant fertile land in the country that could ensure massive food production for consumption by the populace and export to foreign nations.
According to him, lack of productivity is the major problem inhibiting the socio-economic and political growth of the country.
He said that the country required productive public sector that would ensure an increased productivity in all government affairs.
Wamakko expressed confidence that “if Nigerians will have the commitment and determination, the country will move forward in all aspects of human endeavour”.
He said that Nigeria, as a nation, had everything to take it to its rightful position as the giant of Africa.
Earlier, Omitiju commended the effort of the state government for putting in place policies and programmes aimed at improving the lots of the people.
He said that the course members were in the state on a study tour.
He applauded the government for making adequate arrangements to ensure the success of the tour. (NAN)
